People vs. Things

Thursday's are great when I can link up with Amanda and think out loud!

Last time I linked up on a Thursday I talked about living in the here and now. Today, I am excited to share and reflect on a quote I found a few months back. It has such a strong message in just a few simple sentences.

What this says is to not value things over people.

The thing that is sad about our world is that people are used as the tools for each others own gain and things are given the attention people deserve. People who are material crazy care most about what items they possess. The more they have the better they feel and the happier they are, or claim to be. These types of people do not have interest in others simply because of personality, intelligence, compassion and so forth. No matter how good of a friend you think you are, they will only look at you for what you don't have or can do to help advance them to gain more things.

I remember this sort of thing happening even back when I was in grade school. I went to a private school where we had to wear polos everyday, but there was not a specific polo brand we had to buy. I would go shopping with my parents and pick out red, white and blue polos that were the "staple" uniform tops. However in school, other students would have polos from Hollister or American Eagle. I wasn't as widely accepted because I didn't have a certain emblem on the left side of my chest.

Have you ever experienced this?
Where what you had was more important than who you were?

Things are nice, but an item does not have the ability to produce the same feelings that loving someone and being loved in return creates. Real people will always bring more to ones life than an inanimate object ever could. I can think of a few reasons why people may values things over people:
  • they are afraid of being hurt - thing won't hurt you
  • they do not feel like if they love they will be loved in return
  • they are trying to follow what they think others will approve of
  • they are plan 'ole power hungry - those that use for their own gain

What a lot of these people don't realize is that a void of non-material wealth cannot be filled by acquiring more and more material things. Actually the more one tries to fill the void with items the more they will feel they are missing. Well, except maybe for the person whom is power hungry. I can promise you still, that someone who loves people will forever be happier than someone who comes home to a mansion, but has no one to share it with.

Everything I have experienced, the good and the bad, has been made better or bearable with the people who are in my life. There would be no meaning to life if I was going through it alone. You may be able to take the latest technology, the newest car and your hippest clothes with you on the journey, but they themselves cannot walk and enjoy it along side of you.

Life is a roller-coaster full of ups and downs. Friends, family, and love
will be there through it all. Material goods can easily disappear.

A few years ago my families home was broken into. We lost almost everything that had any type of materialistic value. Although this was a very rough time for my family, and still are working through it some days, it was made easier because we had one another. The robbers may have taken our personal and material items, but they could not take the love we have for each other and the memories we hold in our hearts.

We all have certain objects in our lives we hold valuable, but it's important that those objects do not begin to take precedence overall. We have to keep ourselves in check to make sure we are staying true to people, not things.

And never forget to tell those in your life that you love them.

Questions of the Day:
1) Have you had someone value what you had over who you were?
2) What things are important to you? Do people still matter more?
3) Has there been a time when you have lost special material items?

    1. Awww, thank you thank you! I've had my times where optimism has been dim, we have those moments, but I have found through those times that I can totally change the situation around by just finding the good in the bad! I love sharing <3 :)

  2. Beautiful post. I have come to realize the essence of what you write here and so appreciate everything I have been through in my life -- including the good and the bad-- because it has made me a better person.

    1. I couldn't agree more. Everything we experience helps to develop us to be the person we are meant to be. When we can look at all, the good and bad, in this light it makes it just a little easier to swallow and get through. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and comment on my post! :)

  3. I honestly couldn't imagine life without the people that mean the most to me, and there's no way I'd trade them to have more material things. Even though they can drive me crazy sometimes, they're also the ones who are always there when I need them... and that's worth more than anything else out there.

    1. Exactly!! You said it so well. <3 Even the times when we are angry at them or they are driving us crazy they are more important then any type of material item. I feel the same way that you do, I could not imagine life without the people that mean the most to me.

Thank you so much for this awesome link up on Thursdays!
